Pick and Place Cobots

Add value to your production by automating repetitive pick and place tasks. Pick and place involves picking up raw materials, workpieces, finished goods, or packages and positioning them on another work plane to continue the process - work that's traditionally been done by hand. Today, automating these tasks frees your team to bring more value elsewhere in the business.

Let's Talk Benefits

Why add a cobot?

Fast Changeovers

Reprogrammable

Switch to a new product or pack format in minutes, the cobot adapts as fast as your line does.

Safer Workplace

Relieve your workers

Takes over the repetitive, fiddly lifting so your people avoid strain and stay fresh.

Higher Value Work

Free your workforce

Redeploy skilled staff onto higher-value tasks that actually need a human touch.

Always On

Runs 24/7

Keeps packing through night shifts and busy seasons without breaks or overtime.

The Bigger Picture

Why use a pick & place robot?

The Pick and Place robot arm will be mounted to a stationary spot, however this can be re-deployed in minutes if the job at hand changes. At The Robot People, we install vision systems along the production line to ensure quality and minimise robotic mishandling. One of the main functions of a Pick and Place robot are centred around assembly line processes, picking and placing incoming items from a conveyor belt. Other functions of the Pick and Place robot arm include packaging, bin picking and quality inspection.

Pick and Place robots have revolutionised the manufacturing industry.

Common pick and place applications

A pick and place cobot takes over the repetitive transfer jobs on your line. These are the tasks we automate most often.

01

Conveyor picking

Lifting product off a moving or indexing conveyor and placing it where the next step needs it.

02

Packing into trays or cartons

Placing product into trays, cartons or cases in a set pattern.

03

Tote and bin handling

Moving product in and out of totes and bins between stations.

04

Line transfer

Transferring product from one line or machine to another.

05

Sorting and kitting

Separating product by type or grouping items together into kits.

06

Loading and unloading

Feeding product into equipment and taking it out again once the cycle finishes.

Matched to your product

Grippers and vision

Every robotic pick and place cell starts with the product. The gripper and the vision system are chosen around what you are handling.

Choosing the gripper

Finger grippers such as the OnRobot RG2 and the three-finger 3FG15 hold products with a firm, centred grip, while vacuum grippers suit flat-topped items like boxes and lids. We match the gripper to the shape, weight and surface of your product, and where an off-the-shelf gripper is not the right fit, we build a custom end effector designed around your specific task.

Vision guided picking

When products arrive in random positions, a vision or sensing system from ifm, Omron or Leuze locates each one and tells the robot where to pick. That removes the need for fixtures that hold every item in place.

Common questions

Pick and place FAQs

Can a cobot pick products that are not in a fixed position?+

Yes. Vision and sensing from ifm, Omron and Leuze can locate products that are not in a fixed position, so the robot can find and pick them.

What grippers can a pick and place cobot use?+

We use OnRobot RG2 and 3FG15 grippers as well as vacuum grippers, chosen to suit your product.

Does it need safety fencing?+

Cobots can work alongside people without fixed guarding, using area scanners where needed. Systems are designed to comply with Australian Standards for collaborative robots, with support from our Certified Machine Safety Expert.

Can it be moved to another line?+

Yes. The cobot is not bolted down, so it can be redeployed to another task or line.

How do operators run it?+

From a touchscreen, with product profiles selectable from a menu.

How do we know it will keep up with our line?+

We analyse your current line rate, draw the cell into your layout and test with samples of your product before it is built.

Can I rent one to test?+

Yes. You can rent a cobot and try it on your own line before you buy.
